Conflict:
Everyone is getting sick! The serving girl Polly dies and Matilda's mother becomes ill with yellow fever. .Matilda for the first time is faced personally with illness and death. She is also being forced away from her mother, into the country. Matilda and her grandfather escape to the country and are abandoned by the new family they left with. Matilda then gets gets yellow fever. The farmer and his family leave them for dead. Things keep getting worse & worse as if there is no hope. Later on, Grandfather is killed in a fight with one of the thieves trying to steal.
The struggles Matilda and her family face are truly difficult. I don't think I'd be able to survive through these conditions. As would anyone I'd have a very rough time trying to escape the conditions and still find peace with myself.
Themes:
There are many themes of Fever 1793. The main theme of this book is to "survive", or survival. This is because of the yellow fever epidemic in 1793 its hard for Matilda (the main character) to survive and live during this time. Other themes include, death, loss & struggle. Death because of the effect the fever has on the majority of people. Loss because so many people loss someone or even there own life due to the circumstances throughout the story. Lastly, struggle because all people whether they are ill or healthy have a struggle when it comes to surviving and decision making.
